Kazbegi
The high Caucasus, due north of Tbilisi — a three-hour drive up the Georgian Military Highway to Gergeti Trinity, standing alone below a five-thousand-metre peak.
Getting your bearings
Kazbegi is a municipality in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, the high mountain country north of Tbilisi, three hours up the Georgian Military Highway — the old road that climbs through the Gudauri pass and drops into the valley where the mountains close in. The drive is half the reason to go: a steady rise through gorges and shepherds’ country to a place where the air changes.
The town at the top is Stepantsminda, a walking base under the mass of Mount Kazbek. Above it, on a green shoulder of hill, stands Gergeti Trinity, a fourteenth-century church alone against the snow line — the image most people carry home from Georgia. We time the climb for early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, when the mist is still lifting off the valley and the peak stands clear behind the stone.
You can walk up from the village in a couple of hours or take a driver most of the way and finish the last stretch on foot. Either way we send someone who knows the mountain, and a flask of coffee for the top.
The side valleys are the quieter way in: from Juta and Sno you can ride out with local horsemen under the towers of the Chaukhi massif, at whatever pace your experience asks. And in winter the same road that brings you north carries skiers — Gudauri, the country’s main resort, sits on it an hour back towards Tbilisi, so a mountain week here can hold both.
Kazbegi is at its best from June to September, when the passes are open and the high meadows are in flower. Autumn is clear, cold and quieter; in deep winter the road can close, and we plan around it.
It suits walkers, and anyone who wants one true mountain day inside a wider trip. A night or two up here folds naturally into a route between Tbilisi and the wine country, or on the long way west toward Svaneti.
