Mountains & trekking

Horse riding out of Juta and Sno, a ski week at Gudauri, the stone path to Gergeti Trinity and the ridge walks above Ushguli. The Caucasus for people who came to be in it, not to photograph it from the car.

All experiences

Georgia is two-thirds mountain, and for some travellers that is the whole reason to come. This page is for them. The Caucasus here is not scenery you photograph from the car — it is country you ride into, walk through and, in winter, ski down, and we plan mountain days the way we plan everything else: privately, matched to your legs and your nerve.

Riding out from the valleys

Horse riding is how these valleys have always been travelled, and it is still the best way into them. Around Kazbegi we ride out from Juta and Sno, the side valleys under the Chaukhi massif, where the trails follow the rivers and the horses know the fords better than any map does. In Svaneti the riding runs between the tower villages, higher and wilder. You do not need to be a rider — the local horsemen we work with match the horse and the pace to you, and a first-timer’s gentle walk-out is as good an afternoon as a full day in the saddle.

Winter at Gudauri

From roughly December to April, Gudauri — two hours up the Georgian Military Road from Tbilisi — is the country’s main ski resort: wide, treeless slopes above two thousand metres, modern lifts, and beginner terrain that genuinely suits first-timers. We arrange the stays, the passes and instructors we know and trust, and build the week so the non-skiers in your party have their own good days — the cable car up, a sledge, a long lunch in the sun with the whole range in view.

Day walks, matched to you

For walkers, the classics earn their reputations: the stone path up to Gergeti Trinity above Stepantsminda, the gentle river trail through the Juta valley, and the ridge paths above Ushguli in Svaneti, where the day ends with medieval towers below you and Shkhara filling the sky. None of these needs mountaineering. We match the route to your fitness, send a guide who knows the weather’s moods, and keep a shorter version in reserve for the day your legs disagree with the plan.

And in summer, the sea

Come in the warm months and the country adds a coast: Batumi and the Black Sea open for swimming and water sports, an easy pairing with the mountains for travellers who want both inside one trip.

Tell us which of these days sounds like yours — the saddle, the snow or the trail — and roughly when you would come, and we will shape a private mountain trip around it, with a first draft back inside a day.
